Cheltenham Festival Thoughts – Adrian Ellis

Name: Adrian Ellis

Festivals Attended: 23

Why do you love the Festival?

The build up, the atmosphere, the thrill of beating the bookmaker (occasionally)

Best Festival Memory and Biggest Festival Win?

Being there the day Desert Orchid won the gold cup, not my favourite of horses but the noise when he won the gold cup was fantastic

Have two big festival wins, Cool Ground – Had recently had a baby and the win paid for all her clothes for the next 6 months.

Other winner was Cool Dawn. Actually was given to me as a tip.

Do you have a favourite day and why?

The first day is the best, all the waiting is over, anticipation of taking the bookies to the cleaners is 100% there.

What advice would you give someone going for the first time?

Go there to enjoy yourself, take an amount of money you are prepared to lose. If you go expecting to win, it could spoil the overall day.

Visit the parade ring at least once to see the horses before the race.

Enjoy a drink in one of the bars but don’t overdo it as you want to remember the day not wake up not remembering nothing.

Do at least one bet at the bookmakers and another on the tote, they are different betting experiences. If the odds are greater than 16/1 always back on the tote.

Which enclosure do you prefer?

Tatterstall’s – In front of the Guinness stand. Easy access to the Guinness village, the tote and bookmakers.

What is your general approach to betting? Any strong advice for someone betting at the festival for the first time?

Only bet what you can afford to lose

What one thing is a ‘must do’ or ‘must see’ at the festival?

Back a winner!

Anything to avoid?

Drunks

Do you do after racing entertainment / eating in Cheltenham? If so, where?
