Visitors Guide

The Major has prepared a special Cheltenham special section with a guide to many aspects of the Cheltenham Festival from the Majors eyes.

The Major has provided his antepost Cheltenham Festival tips for 2012 on this post, there are no tips in this secion.

In this section of the site, you will find:

  • Around CheltenhamSome ideas of what is happening around the town during the festival and some transport notes
  • On the CourseAll about what you will find around the Racecourse
  • Views of Regular Festival GoersA section dedicated to the thoughts of my friends – what they love about the festival and what they advise you see and do on the day

Whatever practical information may exist about the festival in these pages, I would want to mainly convey the sheer magic of the festival.  The Major although a devout horseracing fan now, was not always.  In my earlier days I barely would watch the sport.

It was my first visit to the festival on World Hurdle day in 2005 that ignited a sudden spark in me about the sport.  Watching Ingles Drever win the first of what was to be hat-trick of World Hurdle crowns, incredible.  I was hooked on the magnetism of the place, the electricity that runs through that small part of Gloucestershire for that special week.

Cheltenham during the festival is a showcase of all of life.  The Irish arrive in droves, it seems like the whole emerald isle has descended.  The wealthy, the landed gentry, the stable staff, the sport, the heaving horses chests after a grueling finish up the hill, the tweed, the heather seller, the man who won a fortune and the man who lost his shirt.  It is epic, I urge you to come.
